Cultural Aspect
The First Harvest is puthari festival. The most significant harvest festival for the Paniya community in the Gudalur region. The name literally refers to the "new rice" (Puttu = New, Ari = Rice). It marks the ceremonial presentation of the season's first paddy to the divine.Despite being a regional festival; the Paniyas hold the primary ritual authority. Paniya elders are uniquely honored with harvesting the first sheaves of paddy, a symbolic act that signals the official start of the harvest for the entire valley. During the procession to the Erumaadu - Kappala temple, the Paniya community leads the way to offer the sacred paddy to the deity Athiraalan. This leadership role provides a rare moment where traditional social hierarchies are inverted, granting the community high ritual status.

Indigenous Knowledge
The festival is often centered around ka:vu (sacred groves), which are remnants of ancient natural shrines. These spaces are managed using traditional ecological knowledge to ensure the land remains fertile for the next cycle. The celebration is inseparable from the sounds of the ci:nam (flute) and the t̪udi (drum). The music is not just for entertainment but is a specific communicative strategy used to invoke ancestral spirits and deities.

Occupation
The festival serves as a cultural archive of the Paniya's history as the primary agricultural experts of the region. Their central role in the ritual is a direct acknowledgement of their ancestral expertise in paddy cultivation and land management.
